Pop artist Sicily Jordan has had a passion for music from her very youngest days, as she sang on stage and performed in musicals as a child. Later she started writing songs, after discovering during a creative writing class in middle school that she was able to craft stories through which her audiences could understand themselves. She started pursuing her talent professionally back in 2020, and her new single, ‘You Got Me’, is the lead track from her debut EP, ‘Between Us’.
The enforced time of isolation in 2020 ensured that Sicily Jordan was able to reflect, and chase after her musical dreams, that she had previously abandoned. It was at this time that she decided her life needed more music, and the masterpieces she had written deserved to be shared with the world. ‘You Got Me’ tells the story of a toxic relationship that you just can’t seem to escape, because you yearn for that one person. Despite going through the same actions, over and over, and understanding deep down the hopelessness of pursuing it, the heart just keeps giving in. Jordan takes her own personal experience of being trapped in the loop of a failed relationship, and she sings in the second verse, “How many nights will I promise I am done with you only to find I am standing once again at your door, reciting over and over maybe this time.” Echoing, “this time, this time, this time”, she lyrically pictures herself returning to her past behaviour, reliving the same wrongs.
The music video for ‘You Got Me’ sees Jordan take viewers on a journey through time. No matter the time period, people still go through the sane physical and mental battle. The video shares this truth by way of transitions which spin Jordan around, while she travels through space and time, fitting with the metaphor of the song’s chorus, that it’s one person’s gravity that keeps her orbiting around them, regardless of the eternal hole they forge in her heart.
