‘Tell Me Why’ is the new single from Austin Texas based singer songwriter, Estani. Her sound is the perfect blend of jazz, reggae, salsa, South of the Border pop, and neo-soul, and she straddles the intersection of all these sounds with confidence.
Estani’s aim is to lift us up, to illuminate and elevate the listener – and sometimes educate us – she’s a voice teacher as well as a musical artist. Her latest single, does every single one of those things, as it tackles the subject of divisiveness, and the need for people to feel their point of view is only right one. There is a feeling of trying to fit into someone else’s square, while knowing that we’re a circle and will therefore never be comfortable. But Estani knows that we should respect the opinions and ideas of others, even if their narrative isn’t the same one we follow.
Musically, ‘Tell Me Why’ is a breath of Caribbean sunshine, with jazz harmonies set to a pop-reggae beat. There’s also a touch of gospel and soul about Estani’s vocals, which beautifully tell the story of why and how we should all accept our differences for what they are, and live together in harmony – after all what we do and say now carves our future. It’s a recipe for unity.
The music video for ‘Tell Me Why’ shows Estani surrounded by a group, many of whom are dancing, each with their hands painted a different colour. The message is clear, it’s a representation of people, everyday people, in their natural state, truly being who they are. Sometimes the hands are in action, sometimes the cast paint one another; the colours mingle like the exchange of ideas and thoughts. The paint symbolises the “standards” we all try and live up to – those of beauty, culture, race, ego, politics etc.
Speaking of the video Estani says,
“For me, adding the paint was a way of expressing the equality of each individual. The focus becomes more about the paint than the people, representative of the collective unity, rather than the stand alone as individuals.”
