Never in the history of the USA has it been more important to vote than in this year’s presidential elections. For too long people have believed that their vote doesn’t matter, but it’s simply not the case. And to help that cause, to encourage people to vote, a group of every day American women from all walks of life, have rallied together for the cause, united in the belief that even a small group can make a big difference. The single, ‘We Need You’, by Women Get Out The Vote, is a powerful protest folk-pop song, and with any luck should prove as important and memorable as the rallying cries in the 60s and 70s.
Conceived by songwriting collective, Creative Natives, Women Get Out The Vote features among its members Brittany Brook, Dahlia Dumont, and Virginia Marcs, along with Jessenia Vargas, Symone “Ximone” Stewart, and Soleil Laurent. Charity James, the writer, voice actor, and fellow member of Creative Native, contributed to the arrangement, as did singer songwriter and comedian, Caitlin Cook. Their message comes out loud and clear: the US needs you! Democracy itself needs for women to get out there and vote.
With a timeless pop sound, ‘We Need You’ directly addresses the women of the USA to fill the ballot boxes, to make those calls, and to spread the word. Women matter more than ever before in this election, and everyone needs to get on board so those odds that seem so overwhelming can be in turn overwhelmed.
Speaking about the song, Brittany Brook shared,
“We want to empower the historical turnout needed to honour the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment and the 55th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.”
The 19th amendment, finally adopted in August 1920, following several decades of long struggle, ensured that no state had the power to prevent citizens voting on the basis of sex. Likewise, the Voting Rights Act, was signed into law by President Lyndon B Johnson in May 1965, thereby prohibiting racial discrimination in voting. Voting rights in the USA have been hard fought for, and so women of all races and colours and creeds owe a debt of gratitude and should get out there and make their mark.
