Northern Irish industrial and metal band System Machine growl their sage advice to “Pay attention to what Mother Nature says”, with ‘In Dust We Trust’, their latest single. The question we need to ask ourselves is – are we heeding the warning?
2020 has seen Mother Nature speaking to us forcefully and harshly in a way like never before, or at least rarely. and while we’re having this time at home we should all be taking it as a learning opportunity, to take a good hard look at what we’re currently doing and what we should be as well, in order to hold back or even halt the march of the terrifying future.
Lead singer Rab Meharg is listening and watching, and telling us what he’s seen as well. The band has always been his way of engaging with the world around him, and he does so with unflinching honesty and intensity in a way that his fans know only too well. ‘In Dust We Trust’ comes from the band’s upcoming EP, ‘Confirm Humanity’, and sees him mince no words nor pull any punches with his tight verses that hit hard, along with distorted guitars, synths, and mind-shattering beats.
Offering a wake-up call to all the bottled up rage we might be feeling in reaction to the current pandemic, ‘In Dust We Trust’ could equally be applied to other widespread human negligence. ‘In Dust We Trust’ asks if how we’re currently living is actually sustainable, and if we’ve got the skills to fully adapt to this – and any other – crisis. This questioning doesn’t stop with the song either, the accompanying music video sees Meharg and System Machine sees a person choosing their values from an app. The likes of reality tv, materialism, social media obsession, and armed conflict all get a “thumbs up”, while it’s “thumbs down” for science, humanity, and humility. It’s an arse-about world, sadly it’s not too far from the truth. We need to make our choices and we need to make them soon, because, contrary to what the Rolling Stones would have us believe, Time is NOT on our side.
System Machine and their music are worth checking out on their official website. Meanwhile be sure to listen to ‘In Dust We Trust’ below.
