Following on from her 2018 debut, ‘PURE’, Taylor Castro is back with a deeply personal track which sees her draw back the curtain from her seemingly perfect Florida life and reveal the difficult and extremely personal battles she has been fighting her whole life.
“PURE was who I wanted to be, without the OCD,” says Castro. “It is still who I am but I wasn’t being totally honest. I had tried to stuff my OCD back down inside me and I didn’t want to write about it. I felt like I wasn’t being true and it was time to address my issues on this record. OCD presents a constant fear and paranoia, so I want ‘Girl, Afraid’ to be a comfort for people who suffer from it as I do.”
With this new change in tack, Castro proves that there is strength to be found in vulnerability. Her exquisite lyrical content seems like the song has been taken directly from the pages of her journal, and the result is a song so personal and heartfelt that it is no wonder it took Taylor an album into her career to gather the courage to release it.
It was a risk which paid off, however. As the feedback for ‘Girl, Afraid’ begins to pour in, it’s clear that this actress-turned-singer has created something truly remarkable. No longer just a song in its own right, ‘Girl, Afraid’ inspired the singer to start an online community via her Instagram profile, encouraging her followers to share their own stories of mental health struggles using the hashtags #beaprincessagain and #royalsoul, taken from the song’s profound lyrics.
But don’t just take our word for it. Watch the stunning video below to see what exactly about this Florida-based superstar is turning heads and opening mouths, getting the all-too-important conversation about mental health going and making sure it’s at the forefront of everyone’s priorities right now.
