Aqua Seca translates as “dry water”, which seems to be a bit of an oxymoron, but it’s the perfect description for the seemingly impossible creative sounds made by California’s Trent Hankinson.
The Orange County native has always been playing drums since he was five and says that,
“music has always been a part of me, I wouldn’t know who I was without it.”
Although Hankinson brings in a band for live performances, he’s the heartbeat behind Aqua Seca, and writes and plays all the instruments on the recordings, with Greg Calbi of Sterling Sound, New York, mastering everything. He is inspired by a wide range of artists, from early Tame Impala, to The Beach Boys. ‘Neural Stereo’, the first Aqua Seca album, will be released this month.
The video for new single, ‘Don’t Care’, was shot on the Salt Flats, in Utah, and is the perfect setting for the song, fitting the punk pop feeling of reckless abandon, and freedom without limitation.
Dressed in a suit and tie, the protagonist is sitting in the centre of three aeroplane seats – with no plane to be seen – in the middle of the salt lake. Nothing to be seen in any direction – endless emptiness. He hides behind the seats, and you realise he has no shoes on. How did he get there? Where is he going?
Later, after running in four different directions around the desert and seemingly hallucinating – maybe the whole thing is a hallucination – a car appears, and he’s seen playing poker…returning to the seats, he’s found to be bound, and the driver of the phantasmagorical car…is him. A mysterious clip almost as mysterious as Aqua Seca.
