Ontario natives, Taylor and Cole Perkins, along with Mike Van Dyk, and Chris Dimas, came together a few years back as alt-rock band, Bleeker, and have since been nominated for both Juno and Canadian Radio Music Awards. Their 2016 debut album, ‘Release You’, was met with critical acclaim, and produced the stand out single, ‘Highway’. Bleeker’s latest release, the single ‘Straight For The Money’, comes with a stop motion animated video, created by Stefano Bertelli, of SEEN FILM.
The anthemic, stadium-worthy sound of Bleeker is evident in all their music and no less so in latest single, ‘Straight For The Money’, which tackles the topic that we all know and don’t want to address – the fact that we all – deep down – love having money. It takes the focus off the money itself however, and instead shows that much as we all need it and want more, money can only bring a temporary happiness, and in the end we feel lonely, and used. Speaking about the song, lead vocalist Taylor Perkins said,
“If the band ever made lots of money… We would still drink cheap beer.”
The comment can be taken by their listeners as a metaphor to always stay true to oneself.
Bleeker’s sound has been compared to both early Rolling Stones, and Cage The Elephant, who, to be fair, sound like early Stones themselves. The band has more than 256 thousand monthly listeners on Spotify alone, where they’ve also been featured on playlists such as Rock This, and The New Alt, with followers of 4.49 million, and 871 thousand respectively.
Produced by HEAVY – aka Jason Bell and Jordan Miller – who are known for their work with Sleeping With Sirens among others, and mixed by Mark Needham, whose own repertoire includes Imagine Dragons, and The Killers, also calls to mind the likes of X Ambassadors and Arcade Fire. The video is enticing and pulls you in and doesn’t let go easily. A rainbow pops up, flowers bloom, birds fly past…then a police chase, a woman dropping someone off a building…a man dashing towards a pile of money carelessly dropped from a truck – going literally straight for the money. The video is quite delightful! Speaking of working with Bertelli, Taylor said,
“We got lucky to work with such a talented artist. I think I want to shoot every video in this style. It is fun to watch with or without the song. The director made the perfect imagery and storyline to take the song to another level.”
