Laoise* first came to our attention in February last year with her single, ‘Bother’, a gritty and impressively honest song about a love gone wrong. Now the singer songwriter, originally from Galway, in the very west of Ireland, returns with her new single, ‘Seriously?’, taken from her most recent EP, ‘Mad’.
‘Seriously?’ out today, July 26, is accompanied by a playful video, which allows the viewer to take a look into the colourful mind of Laoise. ‘Seriously?’ was co-written by Laoise, along with Seán Behan and Richey McCourt, the latter who has also written for Will Young, Matt Cardle, Pixie Lott, and Rebecca Ferguson, among others.
The video makes use of both live action and animation, and is fun with a serious edge.
Speaking of ‘Seriously?’, Laoise says,
“Seriously? is about that feeling when you really, really like someone and you don’t know how tell them but you keep dropping hints and they don’t pick up on them and you’re like ‘seriously?’
It actually made me think about the first time I liked a girl, and she just thought we were just really close friends! When I was writing it, it was the middle of the winter and the weather was horrible, but I kept imagining the feeling of summer and what that would sound like in a song. To me, it feels like driving down a highway with the top down, mixed with the taste of fruit punch and the smell of sun cream. It’s the feeling you have when you’re not worrying about anything other someone liking you back, which I think is something we’ve all felt, especially when we’re younger and carefree.”
Laoise’s music is dreamy, ambitious and quite frank, writing about relationships and heartbreak, with introspective lyrics and an upbeat synth/electro instrumentation. Still just 22, she’s had a great summer so far, performing at gigs and festivals – including Longitude Festival – and ‘Seriously?’ has proven a real fan favourite in her live performances.
Laoise is part of the new breed of Irish musicians: steering away from the acoustic folk, and heavy rock traditions of her homeland, her electro pop tracks, which she records, produces and releases independently, are a breath of fresh air for those who think they instinctively know what Irish music sounds like.
