This second single from the Swedish duo really hits the mark. Alessandra’s haunting vocal really adds a pained, almost lamenting quality to the song.
It starts with a whisper, reminiscent of the great Stevie Nicks, but soon the melody eats into your brain like musical hypnosis and you start to tap along to the beat. Hymner describe their music as “Tapping your feet whilst crying” which is an apt description. It hints at a juxtaposition of catchy pop and reflective moods. It’s a bit like taking a walk on a cloudy day and finally feeling the warmth of the sun breaking through as a reward.
The title is great. I dare anyone to find a song about bicycles that doesn’t make you smile. Couple that with the quirky lyrics and Alessandra’s vocal and it has the feel of optimism and opportunity whilst at the same time her voice feels as if it wants to be somewhere else. Maybe that’s the point. Maybe Hymner want us to be somewhere else, making up for missed opportunities and taking new ones. The song certainly feels full of optimism.
There is one cloud on the horizon. If they are going to Mexico I hope they get there before the wall is built.
