LBM – ‘Bad Habits’

LBM is not a new name for us here at Essentially Pop, in fact, we’ve been following his journey for nearly a year now, starting with his singles, ‘Stranded‘, in May, and ‘Make Believe’ in July, last year. He’s back now with a fab new release, ‘Bad Habits‘, along with a music video that beautifully captures the good looks and charm of the Pennsylvania singer and rapper.

LBM loves the camera, and the camera loves him. This screen chemistry is a rare thing and when it happens, music video directors lap it up, because they know how important it is to establish a believable bond between the subjects they’re shooting, in the three short minutes they have. LBM effortlessly lights up the screen, almost as if he’s not even trying, and in the music video for ‘Bad Habits’, he meets his match, being paired with a woman with whom the dynamics and tension feels very very real.

The song itself pays homage to LBM’s talents, with every bar testifying to his skills and wit, his verbal dexterity, his imaginative lyricism. He doesn’t baulk at poking fun at himself, yet he never once drops his cool. ‘Bad Habits’ is a close examination of the risk you take when you associate with a person whose own dangerous behaviour closely mimics your own. The story is matched to a brilliantly propulsive hip hop beat, that finds its origins in trap and cloud rap, and yet at the same time, it veers away from the established conventions of both sub-genres, and effectively sees LBM creating a unique style and sound of his very own, one that is just as irrepressible as his own personality.

The video, just like the song, is also self-critical, with the girl in the scene flirting hard, throwing all the tricks in the book at him, and despite his own better judgement, LBM falls for them all. Set in a mansion in the Hollywood Hills, it’s a gorgeous day with a beautiful LA skyline stretching out in front of them. If you’re going to fall in love with someone, then what better atmosphere to do it in?
