Finnish punk pop sensation ALMA has just finished touring the UK supporting Christina Aguilera on her X Tour, and beguiled a select London audience in a secret concert last week at the Camden Assembly. Now she celebrates by releasing her new single, ‘Bad News Baby’, the third track from her forthcoming debut album, ‘Have U Seen Her’, which is set for release next year.
Canadian band Marianas Trench have been around for the best part of twenty years, forming in 2001, releasing five albums since then, and touring extensively, most often around Canada and the USA, but also in Australia, the UK and Europe. At London’s KOKO venue, during their UK tour in May 2017, lead singer Josh Ramsay said how he was humbled at how many people were at the show, especially considering they had never released an album in the UK. The venue was packed solid, made up of fans, the curious, and media. All left impressed and wanting more. This year, Marianas Trench *have* released an album in the UK, the magnificent ‘Phantoms’, written around the theme of being haunted by the memory of people in our past. Lisa had the chance to speak to Josh Ramsay, and asked him about the album, the songwriting process, and just when they were hoping to get back to the UK.

Rising pop-trio New Hope Club have just revealed the video for latest single, ‘Permission’. The video sees the band throwing a party and performing in the basement of their friend’s house, unbeknown to the parents who are upstairs also partying. The catchy and upbeat track amplifies the band’s excellent musicianship, and is sure to go down a storm live. ‘Permission’ was added into Spotify’s prestigious New Music Friday Playlist UK (685k followers) on day of release, and has also been added to New Pop Revolution (142k followers) and Apple Music’s Best Of The Week playlist. Olly Murs has released five albums so far, four of which have reached the number one spot, while his self titled debut, released in 2010, had to be satisfied with second place. Not too shady really! Olly’s 6th album, ‘You Know I Know’, set for release this Friday, November 9, looks set to repeat the trend, with its double album style blend of new songs and older hits.
Many in attendance at Croke Park, Dublin, on Thursday May 17 could well have gone with the lyrics ringing in their ears of The Rolling Stones 1965 classic, ‘The Last Time’. Thankfully however the veteran rockers proved they have more than enough stamina, as they played the first show in their mammoth #NoFilter European tour.
It was a sold out show at London’s Omeara, a club built under the arches of London Bridge railway station. Owned by Ben Lovett, of Mumford & Sons, it opened in late 2016 and has swiftly become a popular venue for alternative artists. You don’t get much more alternative than Nahko and Trevor Hall – the latter on his first visit to London – but we knew what to expect and got all of it and then some.
Nightmare Air comprises Dave Dupuis, Swaan Miller, and Jimmy Lucido. The trio are based in Los Angeles and shred up the stage with guitars, drums, and “meticulously layered boy-girl harmonies”. Their studio albums are sublime, their stage performances even more so. Not quite shoegaze, not quite full blown rock, the band’s music is possibly best described as “shoegaze with a rocky edge”.
