“My Life Changed, And The Music Followed”: A3 on Heartbreak, Hope and a New Creative Chapter

With his forthcoming single ‘Maybe It’s You,’ seasoned Elecronic and Dance artist A3 enters a new era, swapping the dancefloor for a more atmospheric and intimate sound.

Inspired by a close friend’s heartbreak and his own personal journey back to love, the heartfelt single is a reminder that even after an ending, there’s always room for hope.

We caught up with A3 to discuss the inspiration behind the track, working with legendary prodycer Ian Barter, and the exciting new chapter ahead.

You’re back with your heartfelt new single, ‘Maybe It’s You.’ Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the track?

A very close friend of mine was going through a painful breakup, and watching someone you care about lose faith in love brought me back to a place I knew well myself.

There was a time when I honestly wondered if I would ever find love again. And then, unexpectedly, I did. It reminded me that sometimes love finds its way back to us when we’ve almost stopped looking for it.

Lyrically, the song feels like both a romantic confession and a moment of personal realisation. Was that something you consciously set out to capture when creating it?

I wanted to record “Maybe It’s You” for my friend, but also for anyone standing in that uncertain space between heartbreak and hope. It’s really a reminder not to let one ending convince you that your story is over. Hearts heal. Doors open. And sometimes the person who changes everything is just around the corner.

As an established electronic and dance artist, ‘Maybe It’s You’ marks a noticeable shift in direction, unveiling a more atmospheric, understated, and easy-going sound. What inspired this evolution? Was it something that emerged naturally through experimentation?

I think my music has evolved because I’ve evolved both as an artist and as a human being. With maturity, you begin to see and feel things differently, and inevitably that finds its way into the music you make.

The period after Covid changed me in particular. It made me much more conscious of how precious, strong and intimate relationships are with the people we love, the connections we protect, and how important it is to really be present with one another.

I think that naturally began to shape both the themes of my writing and the sound itself. I found myself drawn towards something more intimate and reflective, with a different tempo and space to breathe. It wasn’t a conscious decision to leave one sound for another. My life changed, and the music followed.

You worked alongside acclaimed producer Ian Barter on the single. How did that collaboration help preserve your trademark melodic style while also ushering in this new creative chapter?

Ian is amazing, and there was something about the mixture of the two of us that simply worked.

I loved where he wanted to take me creatively, and I think, in turn, I probably took him to a few places he hadn’t expected to go either. That’s what made the collaboration so exciting since it was never one person leading and the other following. It was a genuine exchange.

If ‘Maybe It’s You’ could soundtrack a particular moment, place, or emotion, what would it be? How does its laid-back soundscape help bring that feeling to life?

I sung Maybe It’s You while overlooking a harbour, often very early in the morning or late in the evening. There were these extraordinary moments when the light would fall across the water and everything seemed to become still. It was incredibly beautiful and inspiring.

There was something almost symbolic about that light. As I was singing the, song about helping someone believe in love and possibility again, I felt as though that light was guiding me too.

From making your debut with the charting ‘Feel The Light’ to collaborating with internationally renowned acts like NERVO, your music has continually evolved while remaining a fixture on the dance scene. Looking back on your career so far, what are you most proud of?

Feel The Light will always hold an incredibly special place in my heart. It was my first breakout single, but its significance to me goes far beyond what it achieved commercially.

It was autobiographical. It came from a period of self-discovery and of beginning to understand and accept who I was and where I wanted to go. In many ways, I was finding my own light while writing it.

‘Maybe It’s You’ is the first release in an upcoming trilogy of singles. Does this signal the direction you’re heading in creatively? Are you hoping to reach a different audience, or do you think longtime fans will discover something fresh and exciting in this new era?

Most definitely. I intend to continue writing in this genre because, in a way, it feels as though it has called me rather than me choosing it.

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about as you prepare to release the rest of this new music, both creatively and personally?

Maybe It’s You asks someone else to believe that love and possibility can return, but in making it, I was also asking myself to believe again – to believe in my instincts, to believe in change, and to believe in my music.

So this next chapter is about taking that leap and seeing where it leads. Sometimes you have to risk leaving what you know to discover what else you might become.

Maybe It’s You’ Is Out On August 14th.
