Robert Kuhn’s identity has become so intertwined with his hometown of Galveston, Texas, that he’s adopted the city’s original Spanish name as his musical project, GALVEZTON. Additionally, he pays homage with his new single, ‘Roll To G-Town’.
Technically – because he was born there – Houston is Kuhn’s hometown, but Galveston is where his heart is, and so it’s home. All this is despite having worked an impressive array of jobs and art forms, that’s seen him travel from New York, to Australia, to Costa Rica, and further afield. It was when he returned home to the Texas coast in 2010 however that his music started shaping the sound of the Galveston Bay Area, to much critical acclaim.
GALVEZTON blurs genres with layers of experimentation that have as much to do with old-skool Beck as they do Americana. Their upcoming album, ‘Ocean Cabaret’, brings with it the promise of an homage to that ancient strip of sand, with it’s wild creativity as scorching as the Gulf winds.
‘Roll To G-Town’ has almost become by accident a bit of a Houston area anthem. When they first heard it, a bevvy of Texas stars, including country singer Rich O’Toole, hip-hop legend Bun-B, and rapper-DJ Paul Wall, were drawn to the project. The video also perfectly captures the mindset of someone that’s dead-set on leaving their troubles behind: driving away along the endless highways, the music video sees a man in a classic convertible, top down, rolling along the palm tree lined streets, with his money in hand. He passes stretches of marshland, and old forgotten roadside spots (peep the homage to ‘Ocean Cabaret’) all while seeking his salvation on the Gulf Coast.
