SUPER-Hi x Luke Spiller’s Take On Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ Is An Upbeat Breath Of Fresh Air

In the hands of SUPER-Hi and Luke Spiller, Gotye’s modern classic, ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ is given a whole new breath of life; as if the person in the original has moved on from the heartbreak, and is now much happier where they are.

It’s not like they’ve totally stripped the song of all its melancholy – there’s still some elements of the pain in there, but with a new upbeat rhythm, we get the sense that the narrator is in a much better place. Spiller manages to channel the original pain, confusion, and anguish, but it’s lifted by SUPER-Hi adding their signature summery vibes.

The music video, shot entirely in black and white, is a departure for SUPER-Hi, who are known for their clips that whisk the viewer away to a sun-drenched paradise. The lack of colour in this case, however, doesn’t detract at all, with Spiller’s vocals richly ambient and polished, a perfect match for the aesthetic.

We see Spiller as he strolls through flower-filled meadows, before he heads off in his car, driving through what could only be the English countryside. He’s not in search of anyone or any time, but rather, it’s just him and his headphones – and eventually, the sea. The emotions are powerful enough to transcend any need for colour.
