A homunculus is a human-like creature, created using alchemical means. It’s chaotic and eccentric, and very fitting as the title and subject matter of a song by the legendary Western Massachusetts band, BUNNIES.
Comprising Jeremy Macomber-Dubs on vocals and guitar, Jack Science on vocals and synth, Matthew Newman (vocals/drums), and Rebecca “Becca” Macomber-Dubs (vocals/bass/trumpet), BUNNIES have been working their mayhem for more than two decades, and to date, have four studio LPs under their belts.
Proudly self-proclaimed weirdos, BUNNIES, are certainly of the belief that there’s no such thing as too weird. Their latest album, ‘Horror Spectrum’, has taken nearly half a decade to complete, and for good reason. It’s a psychedelic odyssey, eerie, intoxicating and containing unexpected turns at every corner, as it continues on an exploration of evil.
‘Homunculus’, one of the first songs written for the new album, came about as an examination of modern day morality, corruption, and depravity. Ironically, after the song had been completed, a news report came out about a man in Connecticut, who had been held captive for more than 20 years, and whose life in captivity was spookily similar to that of the subject in the song.
The song is nearly six minutes of sparse and abrasive music and lyrics, monstrous and sinister, telling the story of Stanley, told from the perspective of an onlooker. It’s a disturbing and difficult listen, and this isn’t made any easier by the music video.
Viewers of the music video for ‘Homunculus’, are forced, not just to sit with, but to dissect the implications of the wicked metaphor of the song. Directed by Piper Preston, the band are presented, masked with ghostly swipes of face paint and reveling in the “delight of the wicked few”. Unnerving images parade past, like a nightmare brought to life, with every detail and prop deliberately placed, uncomfortable, and eerie.
