Award Winning Artist Mýa Wows With ‘ASAP’, From Upcoming Album, ‘Retrospect’

Debuting at the tender age of 18 with her eponymous double-platinum album back in 1998, Mýa has continued to wow audiences and critics alike, and expanded into becoming not just a globally recognised singer and songwriter, but also a producer, dancer, and Screen Actors Guild Award winning actress.

That album produced the hit singles, ‘It’s All About Me’, ‘Movin’ On’, and ‘My First Night With You’, while high profile collabs, including ‘Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)’, saw her first nomination for a Grammy Award. Confirming that there’s no such thing as second-album syndrome, Mýa’s star continued to soar, with her sophomore release, ‘Fear Of Flying’, also going double platinum, and spawning hits such as ‘Case Of The Ex’, and ‘Best Of Me’.

2001 saw DC based Mýa’s collaboration on the Grammy Award winning, ‘Lady Marmalade’, for ‘Moulin Rouge!’ become one of the most iconic music videos of the era, earning global recognition and multiple MTV Video Music Awards. It’s no wonder Mýa has so far sold more than 20 million records worldwide.

Additionally, Mýa has expanded into acting, including her role in the Academy Award wining film, ‘Chicago’, earning her a Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as roles in major films and tv shows. She’s taken that a step further, moving into fashion, gaming, philanthropy, and global touring.

In 2008, Mýa launched her independent label, ‘Planet 9’, which saw her become an early advocate for artist ownership and creative control. Since then, she has released multiple independent projects while continuing to tour internationally and engage a cross-generational audience.

2026 sees Mýa continues to move forward, and her upcoming album, ‘Retrospect’, draws from the raw, synth-driven pulse of late ’70s and ’80s Minneapolis funk, with its fearless musicianship, sensual restraint, and groove-forward storytelling. Speaking of the album, Mýa says,

“It’s a bridge between the past and the future,” Mýa says, “honoring the greats, my inspirations, while forging something new”.

She adds:

“The world has yet to receive the best of Mýa”.

‘ASAP’ is the first single from ‘Retrospect’. and it brings with it a smooth, mid-tempo R&B vibe, that blends classic soul, and funk, with a modern groove. There’s a sense of urgency to the track, capturing the necessity of honest communication, while emphasising the vocal clarity and emotional depth that have long been her brand. It was co-produced by Mýa, alongside Grammy Award-winning Lamar “MyGuyMars” Edwards, As Mýa explains,

“This is for my core R&B fans who love feel-good music with meaningful lyrics that hit the soul. ‘ASAP’ highlights reaching a crossroad and choosing clarity – being honest about your wants and needs without fear or hesitation”.

The music video for ‘ASAP’, directed by City James, embraces a retro-modern aesthetic that takes its inspiration from the golden era of MTV. Every scene is filled with warm, nostalgia, such as rotary phones, soft-focus lighting, and intimate framing, while at the same time maintaining contemporary broadcast-ready clarity as Mýa delivers her pleas down the phone.

Her performance, while restrained in terms of choreography, sees Mýa emotionally charged, highlighting her strengths both as a vocalist and on-screen artist.
