The Infamous HER speaks to Essentially Pop about their new single, ‘Born Outta Step‘, and what it’s like to be an outsider.
The Infamous HER has never fit neatly into one box; why has trusting your gut always mattered more than sticking to a sound?
I never really cared what other people thought or think. I just like to do what I like to do, and I don’t just like 1 flavour of ice cream, or just 1 topping on my pizza, so same as it goes for creating music. Whatever I’m feeling that day, will be what I create.
‘Born Outta Step’ feels like a toast to outsiders – what sparked the idea for that song?
It is a toast to outsiders! My friends and even my family inspired the lyrics. Since I don’t fit in a box, neither do my family and friends, and that’s something to be celebrated.
Writing it in such a loose, celebratory moment gives it a lot of heart; how important are friends and shared experiences in your writing?
For this song, yes..we were drinking Guinness and Jameson, drunk, and the ideas just flowed out the same way the shots of whiskey did.
There’s a clear pub-song, sing-along energy to the track – what drew you to that kind of communal feeling?
We wrote the song on St Patrick’s Day. So, we are ready in the drinking spirit; it was just natural at the time.
Your shows are known for being welcoming and expressive; why is creating that kind of space so important to you?
Our live shows are full of spirit, creatives and people who want to feel free and not judged. It’s important to me to create an environment where there is no judgement and people can be and express who they are.
Onstage, you carry a fearless presence – where does that confidence come from?
On stage, this monster of an artist takes over my body, and I become this monster. Its an out-of-body experience. Off stage, I’m kinda shy.
For anyone who’s ever felt out of step with the world, what do you hope they take away from this song?
I want them to be able to celebrate their differences; being different is good and can move mountains. Being different gives you the power to show the world something new.
