Ethan Gold Brings An Instant Pop Classic With ‘The Inhibitionists’ Ahead Of Latest Instalment Of His ‘Earth City’ Trilogy

With his boundless energy and creativity, Ethan Gold returns with his latest single, The Inhibitionists’, part of his ‘Earth City’ trilogy.

‘The Inhibitioinists’ is truly an international affair. The song was written in LA, and recorded in Nashville, Glasgow, and the Scottish countryside, while the music video was shot in Berlin, Germany. With stark scenery and muted colours, following young people as they go about their daily lives, the clip will remind viewers of the likes of films such as ‘Run Lola Run’, and ‘Christiane F’.

Ethan Gold’s talent is to cement himself at the edge of life, where he makes astute observations about counterculture, and indeed, their own countercultures, casting a spotlight on those parts that would otherwise be lost or unnoticed. His latest project, the second instalment in his ‘Earth City’ trilogy, ‘Earth City 2: Nightfolk’, is set for release in September, and takes place throughout just one evening, and was inspired by his own life when he spent a year in Berlin.

Gold cites ‘Feline’, released in 1982 by The Stranglers, as one of his main inspirations, and he certainly manages to capture some of that energy in ‘The Inhibitionists’, as well as the atmosphere of a European cafe, where young people come alive, fuelled by caffeine and the pure joy of a warm summer night. At the same time, he shines a light on those who prefer to stay on the periphery, and reveals that it’s possible to be different without seeming aloof – the inhibitionists are the opposite of exhibitionists, but they are just as important to be recognised. As he sings, “The world is loud with exhibitionists who don’t understand our way of making magic, and we don’t care”.

The music video for ‘The Inhibitionists’ is Gold’s love letter to Berlin’s urban culture, where he lived for a year amongst the singer-songwriters who filled the night clubs and cafes with their lust for life, bright smiles, and heartfelt music. We see a pair of introverted friends, nervously shed their inhibitions, as they take what’s theirs and travel around the concrete mountains and valleys, totally without fear or conspicuousness. It’s inspirational and compelling, and feels like something out of a film become real life.
