We’re All Aboard With Yorkshire Artist Bryony Drake And Her New Single, ‘Singapore Sling’

Hailing from Leeds, Yorkshire, indie-pop artist Bryony Drake’s new single, ‘Singapore Sling’ takes a personal look at her years performing on cruise ships, when her career often had to come before her relationships.

‘Singapore Sling’ was released on the 10th of July, and is available to stream and download here. The single is the title track from Bryony’s upcoming album.

‘Singapore Sling’ is a glorious indie-pop discovery, whose narrative encompasses themes of self-discovery, sacrifice, and the overwhelming pull of home.

A guitar led track with a folky, Americana vibe, ‘Singapore Sling’ was inspired after Bryony shared a drink with her family and partner, during a cruise she was contracted on. As they left, she was overcome by a shift in her way of thinking; she decided that her time away from those she loved must soon come to an end. She sat down and started writing, the words and lyrics slipping effortlessly onto the page, as she poured out her heart’s desire to settle down on land. The song is poignant and wistful, Drake’s vocals bringing an almost sorrowful feel to the song; bittersweet as she reflects on all the exotic places she’s travelled to, but nothing compares to having a home with the ones she loves.

Bryony Drake grew up listening to the songs of the 60s and 70s, with her father a performer in pubs and clubs inspiring her to follow a similar path. At 20 she moved to the Canary Islands, where she started working as a musician, performing every night at the pubs and clubs along the Puerto Del Carmen strip. This led to a career performing on cruise ships, and additionally performing in Canada and the US, Turkey, Spain, and back home in the UK.

Late last year, Bryony relocated to North Queensland, Australia, to focus on her own, original music, which brings with it the warmth of 1960s influences, and intimate storytelling.
