Kelly Glow has Hip Hop in her very being, and with her new single and music video for ‘Black Girl Magic (DJ Nervex Remix)’, she’s showing just how much she’s dedicated to living, breathing, and preserving Hip Hop in both music and beyond.
Growing up on the border of Compton, in southern Los Angeles County, Kelly Glow says “Hip-Hop was always in my bones”. She lived through the effects of drugs, violence, and poverty on her community, but, with a strong upbringing, growing up in a “house of service”, Kelly was given the foundations to be able to pursue higher education and have financial stability. “But through it all”, she says, “Hip Hop remained my heartbeat”.
Kelly Glow wrote her first rap at the age of 12, and started street dancing with a crew during her youth, Hip Hop always remaining a driving force in her life. She relocated to Atlanta, where she found her own way in the Gospel Music community, but even then she was sharing her love of Hip Hop – alongside her Lutheran faith – on stages across the country, winning a Gospel Choice Award in 2015, for Best Hip Hop Album. Nevertheless, that emphasis on the importance of education, which had been instilled in her from the earliest days, never wavered, leading her to a Doctorate in Education, with an emphasis on Hip-Hop Studies, and becoming an educator.
Now however, Kelly Glow is pivoting in her career at the age of 49, and, passionate and motivated, she’s leading the movement to dispel any negative perceptions there might be about the position of women and older artists in music. Kelly Glow is here to prove that there’s no age limit to spreading light and love.
DJ Nervex’s remix of Kelly’s song, ‘Black Girl Magic’ sees these two creatives come together as a perfect match. DJ Nervex wrote the instrumentation several years previously, but when Kelly’s verses were laid over it, it was as if pieces of a puzzle had been waiting to be assembled. In the remix Kelly Glow is allowed to soar with power and strength with her impeccable flow. She commands an authority that never lets go, and she’s leaving nobody in any doubt as that she’s here to be taken seriously.
It’s a nostalgic track with a 90s vibe, and when Glow gets to the second verse she’s praising the women, those Black visionaries who stood for making a change – much like Kelly herself. She is however also laying the path clear for those young women “who know they have it”, and calling on them to embrace that which makes them unique, and accept their worth.
The music video for ‘Black Girl Magic (DJ Nervex Remix)’ was directed by Kelly Glow’s close friend, and renowned director, Will Thomas. Thomas manages to channel the bounce of the 90s, with its “West Coast Boom Bap”, and gives it an atmosphere that’s pure LA. Kelly Glow always makes sure she’s closely involved with her videos, and even when she was recording the track in the studio she had a vision for what the clip would entail. She wanted to show the LA she grew up in, with its classic convertibles, neon lights, and, naturally, lots of dancing. A lifelong dancer herself, she knows its importance, and, rather than relegating them to the background, she elevated the dancers to sharing the spotlight, additionally highlighting the many diverse styles of street dance across Hip Hop’s many subcultures. The clip serves as part love letter to Hip Hop and part a nostalgic adventure, but there’s one thing for certain – Kelly Glow’s on her way to something special – and we’re right here at the start of it all.
