Captains Of Entropy Are Committed To Improvisation With Instrumental Track ‘The Flea’

Captains of Entropy, comprising Mike Kanon on keys, Reilly Wareham on bass, and Jason Young on drums, come together as a tight knit crew with their instrumental experimentations in rhythm and harmony. This is no less evident in their latest release, ‘The Flea’, which also comes with a music video jam packed with Easter Eggs and gags.

Out of West Los Angeles, the trio started out as a weekly jam session, giving them a therapeutic release during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Since then, they have found their sound evolve into something much more, richly textured, cinematic soundscapes with a seriously laid-back vibe.

Captains Of Entropy’s debut album, which was recorded at the iconic Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood, promises to strike exactly the right chords, while delivering musical storytelling, combined with genre-blending compositions. Unlike Entropy, which is defined as having states of disorder, randomness, or uncertainty, Captains of Entropy instead present a well-oiled machine that is in perfect working order, albeit with whimsical grooves, melodic sweeps, and multi-layered sonic textures.

Their debut single, ‘The Flea’, was inspired by Mike’s true life flea infestation, and for the music video, writer/producer Matthew Mourgides and director Ryan J. Reynolds saw the opportunity to turn this itchy sitch into a full-blown sci-fi adventure. A suspicious truck pulls up and the mystery commences, with all the hallmarks of a retro monster movie right from the start. Our trio are seen to be “captains of industry”, making dubious deals in dodgy backrooms. To their unawares, an entity has somehow managed to throw everything off beam. The tycoons enter an elevator, which transports them somehow to a desert landscape, rather than their office building. Once there, they are met by an anthropomorphic flea, who guides them to becoming their true form – Captains Of Entropy. Their business trappings are tossed aside, and, with the provided instruments and sunglasses, they begin their journey into organised chaos.
