Given that he grew up surrounded by music (his father owned a music store), it should come as no surprise that Eric Straton discovered his passion for drumming very early on. These days he channels his creative energy through We Feed Alone, the project he founded back in 2010 alongside bassist and songwriter Doug Wagner, and now joined by Scout Hughes.
We Feed Alone’s dark, driving rhythms and soul-stirring lyrics take listeners to surreal worlds with an innovative, industrial, and grunge sound, combining rock with introspective, intricate, and raw storytelling. This is no less so in their latest release, ‘ONE ANOTHERS’.
Diving into our innate, human need to turn to one another for safety, protection, and balance, and written from a real-life experience, ‘ONE ANOTHERS’ is a true collaboration, with Scout laying down the foundation, the story stratified with raw, rock-driven guitar riffs, compelling vocals, and a driving drum loop. Eric turned his keen ear for mixing and producing, enriching the grungy spirit of the track, layering drums and bass in such a way that they reflect the classic, gritty sound of early Indie and Industrial rock. Together the trio added the final polish to the production, ensuring that it was an anthem of resilience, and one which provides a sense of hope.
Further heightening the sense of dreamy mania, the music video was self-recorded and edited, with behind the scenes footage seamlessly woven together with simple, introspective shots. The clip captures the unease of perhaps being on a bad trip, perfectly encapsulating the discomfort and hopelessness felt when traversing unfamiliar roads all alone. For some reason, we never see Scout’s actual self, but rather his reflection in a mirror. Trippy, disconnected, and disorienting, it hints at a breakdown, with each shot building onto the dynamic. Inevitably there is a moment where everything lets loose, a visceral experience, mirroring the emotional turbulence of the song.
