It’s Been A Long Time Comin’: M. Spano Gives Us The Down Low On His Music And What To Expect From Him In The Future

We follow on from our review of M. Spano’s new single, ‘Long Time Comin’‘, and go a bit deeper into what makes him tick.

What do you enjoy about making music? You have experience as a studio session artist—so what motivates you to make original music?

For me, making music is a way to express myself that I feel can’t be accomplished any other way. Putting sound to your feelings. It’s unlike anything else, and that’s what I enjoy about it. I think it’s important for artists and musicians to get creative and write music. Everyone is unique, and embracing that uniqueness is important, and is largely what motivates me to make my music.

You’ve been making music since you were a teenager—how do you feel your style has evolved since then and how would you describe your current style?

As a teenager and into my early twenties, I was a guitarist in many bands. My guitar carried me through many different projects of many different styles. Everything from classic heavy metal, to post-hardcore, to folk and even modern pop. But through all of that, I always knew that I needed to eventually make the music that truly resonated with me. The sound of the early 2000s is what inspired me to play music as a child, and now I have finally started to make music in that vein.

What makes “Long Time Comin’” stand apart from other songs with a similar sound?

I think “Long Time Comin”’ is very evidently inspired by the sound of the early 2000s pop/rock bands like The Goo Goo Dolls and The Fray. But to me, it adds a contemporary edge to that sound. The airiness of the verses, along with the “trippy” bridge and various samples throughout the song put a modern twist on a largely classic sound.

Talk to us about the relationship in “Long Time Comin’”—what is the story behind this pair of lovers and what were you hoping to convey in the lyrics?

Long Time Comin’ is about a girl I was seeing a while back. It was at a time when it was refreshing to have someone like her in my life. After a day together, I was just inspired by how genuine I felt the relationship to be, and where I felt it was going. That day in particular ultimately inspired the lyrics for “Long Time Comin’”.

The lyric video features scenes of happy couples together—how do these visuals help to capture the essence of the track?

The song is about new love and the feeling that new love brings. The feeling like the world is a whole new place, filled with endless possibilities. I think the youthful couples in the lyric video and the vastness of some of the starry scenes put a perfect visual to that narrative. I also think the nostalgic feel of the images themselves very adequately portrays the song’s early 2000s vibe.

Would you consider turning this into a full music video in the future?

I would consider turning it into a full music video in the future! Any opportunity to create a visual to tell a song’s story is a fun and exciting process that should be embraced. I think it is so important to connect listeners to the song.

What has been the response for “Long Time Comin’” so far from fans? Do you hope fans resonate with the song?

So far fans have shown an overwhelming amount of support and praise for the song! I’m finding that the people that like it, truly like it. It’s easy to tell when feedback is genuine, and “Long Time Comin’” has received quite a bit of that kind of feedback. It’s so nice for me to see my art appreciated and resonating with other people the way it does with me.

Do you have more songs and videos in the works? What’s next in your musical career?

I currently have a demo in the works for my next release! A track in a similar vein to “Long Time Comin’”, it’s a hard-rocking, emotional piece that I’m extremely excited to share. And with it, will most definitely come another video. I’m not completely sold on the name of it yet, but it’s a song that pushes my vocals more than others have, and brings a new level of emotion that I’m not sure has been heard from me to this point. I am thrilled to get back in the studio and officially get rolling on the track!
