While he was born in Oklahoma, and honed his craft in Nashville, Roger Jaeger’s sound nevertheless is more that of the world-traveller, taking some of each part of the world he’s lived in. He moved to the former logging city of Redding, in California, at the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic, and it was here that he discovered the serenity that’s evident in ‘Wander’, the title track of his latest album.
Written in collaboration with Nashville-based songwriter Tripp Weir, ‘Wander’ sees Jaeger draw from his experiences travelling, having lived both all over the USA and abroad, his world view widened, satisfying his curiosity. Jaeger considers himself both “prone to wander,” and “prone to wonder”, as expressed in the song; his vocals perfectly complementing the Americana vibes as he “I’m always tired of wandering away from my home,” while freely admitting that he also loves chasing the “great unknown”.
Jaeger addresses those complex emotions that travellers experience when visiting somewhere new, and advises listeners to trust their gut, and let their lives take them where they are truly meant to be.
The music video for ‘Wander’, directed by Redding photographer and videographer Marcus Mezzano, evokes the sense of wonder that Jaeger takes with him at all times: the visuals are both sharp yet mellow, signifying that beauty can be found everywhere and in everything. Jaeger travels along the roads of Northern California, with his acoustic guitar in the back seat of his car, he stops off to check the map, and has a pint or two with friends, while playing the guitar. The classic cars in the clip were donated for filming by the community of Redding, yet another factor that illustrates Jaeger’s gift for making his home wherever he happens to be.
