In a music industry that’s dominated by suits and an attitude of compromising quality in favour of mass appeal, Lauren Hulbert is pretty much the breath of fresh air we’ve all been looking for. The video for her new single, ‘Honeydew’, is light and airy, and as sweet as the fruit it’s named after.
Recently moving to Nashville from Thousand Oaks, California, Lauren Hulbert has been writing music for over 17 years, and in 2017 she released her first record, ‘Beneath the Soil’, a compilation of she’d been writing and recording for more than a decade. Following this in 2020 with her EP, ‘Superbloom’, Lauren established her stripped-down acoustic style, with its primary focus on the human condition. Her music is memorable and relatable, as she lets her hopes and fears guide her as her emotions come through.
‘Honeydew’ was written back in 2010, and recorded in 2016, finally being released on ‘Superbloom’ in 2020. It was originally written for Lauren’s boyfriend, with whom she lived in Ecuador, and while their relationship is no longer a thing, she still recalls vividly the feeling she felt about the honeymoon phase of their early days. ‘Honeydew’ is therefore not about any person in particular, but rather, it’s about the idea of a relationship that’s filled with love.
A laid-back, acoustic track, ‘Honeydew’ serves as the perfect track for anyone in love, or who has even thought about it.
The clip for ‘Honeydew’ was shot in Sebastopol, California, about an hour north of Thousand Oaks. She co-directed with videographer Wren Huxley, and the video follows her as she relaxes in a field, on what seems to be the most delightful day. Playful forest nymphs interrupt her dozing, but it’s okay. She reads to a toddler dressed as a bee, before meeting up with her soulmate, having fun on the dock of a lake. Speaking about the video, Hulbert says it was originally meant to just focus on her playing her guitar outdoors, but the involvement of friends pitching in to help, resulted in the more fairy-tale-like video.
