Help Is On The Way: We Speak With Marlon Davis About His Song, ‘Handyman’, The Move From Jamaica To the US, And His Inspirations

In Marlon Davis’s latest track, he sings about a handyman, who makes his living fixing up problems around the home. We spoke to him about his song, and also the experiences he’s had moving from Jamaica to Indianapolis.

Hi Marlon, thank you for speaking to us today!

You moved from Jamaica to Indianapolis following your heart and career. What was that like, did you experience any culture shock, and how did you overcome it?

Yes, it was a culture shock for me moving from Jamaica to live in the USA at that time. Music has always been my passion and the reggae music genre was my most accustomed style. But Indianapolis was not the place for that music so I had to get a 9-5.

Your latest single, ‘Handyman’ is a fun bop of a song. How did you come up with it?

I came up with the “Handyman” single title after recognizing that there are lots of broken homes with a father figure, and around my house, I would have to try fixing broken things and attempt minor repairs before I called the professional repair guy.

One day I visited the recording studio to meet with Joseph French, a music producer in Indianapolis, and he was playing that beat. Right there, I started vibing to the beat with some of the lyrics that was already written – then I started to think of all the ladies in the world and how would I treat them if I am their love and their “Handyman.”

Who are your biggest inspirations in life and in music? Why?

My biggest inspiration in life was my late father, Samuel Davis. He was a local carpenter in Jamaica and I do believe he was also a “Handyman.”

My biggest inspirations in music are Bob Marley, he stands for love and unity; Rappa Biggie and Busta Rhymes, they speak of their struggles and where they are from; Burna Boy and others who makes feel good music in these serious times.

What advice do you have for anyone who is considering getting into music, or is contemplating changing their entire life, as you did, to follow their dreams?

My advice to anyone considering getting into music is you don’t have to travel to big cities to make it in today’s world; social media is available everywhere. Stay motivated, stay dedicated, get educated, be sophisticated, and be creative.

What’s next for Marlon Davis? What should fans expect?

More great music and videos on their way – every other month a new song should release. My fans should expect great music words they will relate to and find Marlon Davis music streaming on all digital platforms.

What question do you wish someone would ask you in an interview, but nobody ever does – and what’s the answer to that question?

Questions I wish someone would ask me in an interview:

Do you have a sponsor? No.

Do you fund your own music career? Yes.

Are you satisfied with the life you’re living? Sometimes.

Would you like some help/assistance? Yes.
