A pop powerhouse known for her raspy, soulful vocal style, KAT has made her name with songs that highlight her incredible gift for storytelling. With new single, ‘Rise’, KAT reveals a different side of herself, one that reveals her as more vulnerable than before.
The strong women in KAT’s life have been the inspiration behind her music, such as Aretha Franklin and Etta James, female artists who were known for not messing around, and for whom music was a way by which they could assert their power in the world. KAT says,
“I loved their tone, the raw honesty and emotion of the songs they sang, the story-telling, the bearing of their soul through their voices – I knew I wanted to sing with this kind of authenticity and write songs that had a story to tell”.
Another strong woman in KAT’s life is her mother, and when asked to speak about ‘Rise’, which dropped on April 21, the artist said,
“I wrote it in real time while emotions were messy and life uncertain and allowed my experience to lead the writing. The empowering message at the heart of the song was where I hoped to be in the near future. I have to credit my mum for the inspiration behind the uplifting spirit of ‘Rise’, her wise words and belief in me at a time where I was at my most fragile made all the difference”.
Taking on the mantle of power in her music has seen KAT sell out headline shows in venues in Camden, as well as amassing praise from both press and radio alike, especially with her 2022 single, ‘Liar Liar’. New single ‘Rise’ sees her move one step closer to the release of her debut EP, ‘Warrior Heart’.
The anthemic ‘Rise’ sees KAT open up her heart to reveal her softer side, one which can be hurt. Nonetheless, it also serves as a means of catharsis – in the song she shows that she won’t be held down by the troubles and hard times in her life. “Stand up tall, don’t be ashamed, sometimes we all gonna fall”. Set against a simple piano and acoustic guitar instrumental, KAT’s voice is beautiful in its strength of conviction, as she sings about healing, and being open to those who want to help when you’re down.
‘Rise’ is out now and available to stream and download here. You can find out more about KAT and her music online on Instagram, Facebook, SoundCloud, Spotify, and YouTube.
