30 years ago last year Will Wheaton won a record deal with MCA via Dick Clark’s USA Music Challenge. Sadly the deal didn’t go through. At the very last minute, the label announced they’d decided not to go through with the David Foster-produced album. What did Will do? He did what he had always done. He took it in his stride and made way for the next opportunity: when God closes one door, he opens a window.
And opportunity certainly did arrive – later that night he was offered a sold-out arena tour of Japan with his friend, the legendary J-Pop artist, Namie Amuro. And while singing in Japanese might be a challenge for most people, it was a walk in the park for Wheaton, who had years of multilingual operatic training. From there, Will Wheaton has shared the stage with acts such as Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, and Rod Stewart. It seems the deal with MCA falling through was a blessing in disguise.
Will Wheaton has in those years since released two exceptional R&B albums, ‘Consenting Adultz’, and ‘Old School Soul’, and all the while building a career as a highly successful real estate agent in Los Angeles. He’s known around the City of Angels for “Selling Los Angeles One Note At A Time”.
Will Wheaton’s new single, ‘Lady In My Life’, sees him take the Michael Jackson classic and make it his very own. Not only that, it’s the song that won him the USA Music Challenge all those years ago. Arranged and refreshed by Wheaton himself alongside Deyon Dobson, the new single sees the crooner sing along to live strings, a groovy bass, and shimmering keyboards.
The music video commemorates the other lady in his life, Real Estate. We see Will singing as he welcomes clients to an open house, and with his characteristic humour, he combines both aspects of his life in a wedding of sorts. He’s not just a singer, he’s not just a real estate agent – he’s both and he’s damned good at both of them.
