Set for release on December 3, ‘Right Kind Of Town’ is the brand-new single from Kevin Patrick McGowan. The Scottish artist, who is a well-established singer songwriter, inspires pride and love for his beginnings and background.
With a classic retro sound reminiscent of John Lennon, George Harrison, and Donovan, Kevin Patrick McGowan wrote, sang, and played every instrument on ‘Right Kind Of Town’, as well as all the producing, mixing and mastering. A laid-back acoustic guitar provides the perfect backing for his sweet, soft vocals, soon joined by keyboards, electric guitar, and drums.
The song had its origin in a disagreement Kevin had with another artist he had been working with in the studio, who mocked his background and working-class origins. His rage welled up inside him to the point that he went home and wrote the new single straight away, showing in his lyrics the exact opposite perspective.
Speaking about the song, Kevin said,
‘The song was all about not being ashamed of where you have come from and that you can achieve something no matter what problems or disadvantages you have; it reminded me of how lucky I was to come from the background I came from, I learned so many lessons of life on those streets and from the people that frequented them, your past can be your best asset, it taught me to appreciate the wins and learn from the losses.’
Growing up, Kevin was introduced to the music of Jimi Hendrix, and set about learning guitar, then launching his own musical journey from that point. He co-formed the band, Coloured Dreams, who gained a cult-like status in both his hometown and Europe, among the psychedelic underground scene. After touring Europe many times, the band split, and Kevin’s subsequent solo career has seen him twice signed to indie labels, and performing all over the world, including the Cavern Club in Liverpool, and Hollywood’s IPO Festival.
Kevin has since set up his own record label, “Imagine and Believe Studios”, dedicated to his musical hero, the late John Lennon. When he’s not writing and recording music, Kevin produces, as well as performs in a variety of musical set-ups, including theatre shows and acting.
