In the first verse from ‘I’m Good’, the new single from Najjah Calibur, he sings, “I’m from a place where you can truly feel free”. While he means his own mental state, he’s also referring to his home town of Toronto, Ontario, and he makes that unmistakably clear in the accompanying video for the song.
‘I’m Good’ is a high-energy, club-ready track; it’s upbeat and joyous, with Najjah Calibur’s happiness infectious in the extreme. He’s been a fixture in Ontario since his childhood, and been involved in many different musical movements during his time in Toronto bands including Bluesunderdog, who toured Canada with the Black Eyed Peas, and Najjah’s World, just to name two. Najjah Calibur has also blazed a trail through the underground as a solo act, and along the way has found time to also collaborate with Trinity Chris and Bush Life.
‘I’m Good’ sees Najjah Calibur return to music after a hiatus as an award-winning international host for FIFA, and he’s performing it at the World Cup, in Qatar – no wonder he’s good!
Najjah sings, raps, and rides the rhythm with remarkable charisma in every verse and chorus, with infectious and inspiring enthusiasm and optimism. The pop-inflected track also combines elements of rap, rambunctious dance, and rowdy funk. You could pretty much say it sounds like Toronto on a beautiful summer day, where subcultures collide beautifully in a cloud of artistic liberation.
The music video for ‘I’m Good’, directed by Dan Barker, continues this vibe, and actually DOES show Toronto in the summer. We’re shown the red-brick streets of the pedestrian zone by the Distillery, the proudly multicultural Spadina Avenue strip and unique Kensington Market, and the bustling, brightly-lit Downtown. Most of all, we’re shown ordinary Toronto residents, assuring us that, like Najjar Calibur, they, too, are feeling good. As they should!
