The High Plains Drifters Release Lyric Video For Latest Single, ‘The One That Got Away’ – Make Sure You Check Out Our Interview Too!

While the name The High Plains Drifters conjures up visions of tumbleweed and campfires, the only plains they travel along are musical. While the band’s style has repeatedly been described as “genre-bending”, frontman Larry Studnicky’s musical roots can be found when, in his last two years of college, he first heard Elvis Costello’s ‘My Aim Is True’, and the Rolling Stones released ‘Some Girls’.

Since that time he has honed his unique storytelling style, which has added influences from the Punk and New Wave movements, as well as inspirations from icons such as The Travelling Wilburys. Alongside Studnicky, producer Greg Cohen, guitarist John Macom, keyboardist Charles Czarnecki, guitarist Mike DoCampo, drummer Kyle Cassel, and bassist Dave Richards infuse the lovelorn tales with electro-pop synths, bossa-nova vibes, and much much more.

While the official music video for ‘The One that Got Away’, directed by Lars Skaland, featured a trip through Trondheim, Norway, led by Julie Louise Bjelke, the lyric video holds memories of a different “one that got away,” and stars Marit Holan Brattås.

In an erotic dreamscape, the group evokes pure nocturnal lust. Alongside mannequin legs and sensuous paintings, a luscious fantasy woman teases and turns over an IKEA high riser teenager’s bed (the sort with a space for a desk underneath). Neon lights from the red-light district flash before your eyes, and you’re tossed into a dizzying cityscape. The visuals are enthralling, and possibly distract from the lyrics, but overall it’s an enticing clip and yet another good reason to listen to this song.
