Candlebox – ‘Riptide’

Seattle Washington band Candlebox have helped shaped the direction of contemporary music, from their earliest days when they were a part of a group of courageous PNW artists, who identified the relationship between classic rock, metal, punk, blues, and experimental music. Just like their grunge and alt-rock peers, they were rewarded with massive worldwide success: hit singles and albums (including their quadruple-platinum self-titled debut), global tours, and a permanent place in the hearts of millions. That’s a vital part of the Candlebox story, and always will be.

When they released their seventh album, ‘Wolves’, back in the summer, it was met with high praise from fans and critics alike, who felt as though it was the perfect continuation of the band’s sound and aesthetic. Packed full of irresistible tunes, and played by a tight, undeniable rock band with real muscle and a great sense of drama and dynamics, ‘Wolves’ was the album that every Candlebox fan wanted on their shelf.

Their latest single, ‘Riptide’ is possibly the showpiece of ‘Wolves’, and serves as a clear demonstration of everything that has made Candlebox the definition of great rock music for the past three decades. With emotionally engaging verses that lead on to a sing-along chorus, combined with propulsive beats, skilful guitar, and a magnetic performance by the irrepressible frontman Kevin Martin, there’s everything a fan could want, and plenty for newcomers to the band to get their teeth into.

The video for ‘Riptide’ sees the camera capture Candlebox in the studio, recording the very moment they transform what is arguably a certified stomper of a song into showcase for not just Kevin Martin’s voice, but also the band’s impeccable songcraft. With every downstroke, strum, and harmony, they make their passion, imagination, and complete commitment evident.
