Born and raised in Jos Plateau, Nigeria, but now living in Miami, Poshbugati has always remained true to his humble beginnings, and prides himself and his music on his love for his family. The artist started out singing in the Church choir, and then was inspired by musical legends like Fela Kuti, Tupac Shakur, and Bob Marley. His propulsive Afro-pop sound is nowadays centred on his family, in particular his two daughters. New single, ‘Girl Dad’, therefore would on the surface be about his story, but it’s also about another dedicated father of girls, the late Kobe Bryant.
The mood in Los Angeles last year on January 26 went from buoyant to despair when the news hit about the deaths of basketball icon Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna “Gigi” Bryant. Killed in a helicopter crash just outside of LA, the pair were on their way to training, accompanied by seven others, including Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife Keri, their daughter Alyssa and Harbor Day School assistant coach Christina Mauser. Additionally, another young player, Payton Chester, was also killed, along with her mother Sarah Chester.
Bryant had frequently boasted about his love for his daughters, even telling a pregnant reporter once that, āGirls are amazing. I would have five more girls if I could. Iām a girl dad.ā The hashtag #GirlDad went viral in honour of Kobe and Giannaās death, and seeing it, Poshbugati made his own version of what those words meant to him in the video for ‘Girl Dad’, making it a celebration of all the daughters out there.
The clip shows Poshbugati providing strong parental support, and showing his daughters what to look for in a partner. HeĀ provides for his daughters in every way; he cooks them breakfast, buys them clothes, and plans a whole day of adventures, and, most importantly, he supports, cares, and uplifts his girls every day. In the song we hear him call out to fathers of the world to āwake up from their slumberā, and embrace their daughters. It’s encouraging to see: so often we think of mothers as the more nurturing and affectionate parents, but in reality, love is love.
