Meresha – ‘Red Headed Lover’

Meresha has been putting in the hard yards for a lot of years now, and we first came across her back in 2016, with her single, ‘My Love Has Come’. The artist who came from Warsaw, Poland with her family in order to further her music career certainly knows what it’s like to put your heart and soul into following your dream, and her thoughtful pop songs and electronic and dance music have been entertaining her fans for the better part of a decade. But sometimes Meresha wants to break out of that, she wants to roar and take her fans to a different level, and this is what she does on new single, ‘Red Headed Lover’.

There’s effectively two Mereshas in the music video for ‘Red Headed Lover’. On the one hand we have the blonde, reserved, and elegantly coiffed, and on the other, we have the red-headed Meresha, flame haired, flirty, and above all, ready to rock. Of course these are two halves of the same coin; you can’t have the one without the other.

‘Red Headed Lover’ comes from Meresha’s 2020 release, ‘Look How Far’,  the follow up from her 2017 EP, ‘Enter The Dreamland’, and singles ‘Violet Night’, and ‘Olivia’. Her poise is still evident, and ‘Red Headed Lover’ builds up on the success of her previous releases, with that same charm and intelligence, not to mention innovation. Producing her own sound since she was a teen, Meresha’s choice of beats and synths are therefore the perfect match for her breathy and direct, often confrontational vocals, and her musical style which she’s dubbed, “alien pop”. It’s otherworldly, but it’s professional through and through.

The video for ‘Red Headed Lover’ sees Meresha chasing the male object of her desire, but that comes secondary to the real relationship in the clip, that of the singer and the woman she sees in the mirror. As the blonde, she is innocent, and somewhat reticent; as the redhead she is driven and determined. One thing’s for sure, she knows what she wants and she’s bound to get it at whatever cost.
