Alt/Dreampop duo EMERGER have released the music video for their new single, ‘State Of Mind’. The pair, comprising Emma de Goede and Gerry Matthee, both studied music at the University Of Cape Town, South Africa, and after graduation concentrated on writing material which would become their debut self-produced mini-album, ‘Bloom’. The new release is the first since that album, and marks a musical turning point for EMERGER.
EMERGER won first prize out of 5000 entries in The Avid and Abbey Road International Song Contest with their debut single, ‘Break & Fall’, and were rewarded with their song being mastered at London’s Abbey Road Studios. Following this they were showcased by Apple Music, in their New Artist Spotlight, and their songs were featured on prominent playlists, including Apple Music’s Best of 2018. Their ‘Bloom’ album, mastered by Christian Wright (Radiohead, Coldplay) at Abbey Road Studios, garnered a great deal of international attention, including features on BBC Radio, and BBC Introducing.
Now, EMERGER share the music video for their latest single, ‘State Of Mind’. A powerful, yet dreamy visual, we are taken on a journey to a world of freedom and fantasy. The pair perform on an abandoned beach, with the buildings of Cape Town rising up in the distance, giving the clip an eerie, dystopian feel.
The video’s sense of abandonment is the perfect match for the song, with its lyrics about quarantine dreams. The song was written from the point of view of hope for the future, and serves to remind us to make the best of what we have right now. Synth driven, the music propels you with its catchy rhythms, and its elements in turn of both peace, and emotionless solitude. It’s all a state of mind.
The video for ‘State Of Mind’ was self created and directed by the duo themselves, while also featuring the cinematography of Kyle Wesson.
