Robert Plant is set to release his 11th album, ‘Carry Fire’, on October 13, through Nonesuch/Warner Bros. His first full-length release since his highly acclaimed ‘lullaby and…The Ceaseless Roar’, released in 2014, was produced by Robert at Top Cat studio, in Box, Wiltshire, with further recordings at Real World and Rockfield Studios.
Robert is once again accompanied by the sensational Space Shifters, who include John Baggot on an absolute myriad of instruments including keyboards, moog, loops, percussion, drums, brass, t’bal, snare drum, slide guitar, piano, electric piano, and bendir. Justin Adams joins him on a similar range, playing guitar, acoustic guitar, oud, E-bow quartet, percussion snare drum, and tambourine. Dave Smith also plays bendir, tambourine and drum kit, and adds in djembe, while Liam “Skin” Tyson plays dobro, pedal steel, and twelve string, as well as acoustic guitar. The band has now been joined by Seth Lakeman.
‘Carry Fire’ sees Robert Plant and the Space Shifters joined by Chrissie Hynde on the duet ‘Bluebirds Over The Mountain’, which was written by rockabilly legend, Ersel Hickey, and later recorded by both Richie Valens, and The Beach Boys. Albanian cellist Redi Hasa also performs on three tracks, while Seth Lakeman plays viola and fiddle.
Robert and the Space Shifters toured ‘lullaby and…The Ceaseless Roar’ for two years, with their unique sound and vision becoming even more creative and powerful. It’s this ultimate cohesion which sees them bring ‘Carry Fire’, with its meld of unusual rhythms and naturalism.
Plant returned to England three years ago, after having lived in Texas for some time. He says of the album,
“It’s about intention, I respect and relish my past works but each time I feel the lure and incentive to create new work. I must mix old with new. Consequently, the whole impetus of the band has moved on its axis somewhat, the new sound and different space giving way to exciting and dramatic landscapes of mood, melody and instrumentation”.
