MRYGLD – ‘Cool Kids’

We’ve covered a lot of artists from Birmingham, Alabama recently and so we bring you another from the indie rock city which keeps on giving. MRYGLD (pronounced “marigold”) was formed this year by Brandon Snipes and Shane and Alyssa Jewell, who recruited drummer Kyle Blair and bassist James McCauley. The group has played lots of live shows locally, and have recorded their self-titled debut EP, released in June.

The video for their first single, ‘Cool Kids’, introduces the band through a nerdy primary school performance, with the band on stage, dressed in awkward clothes (think ‘Napoleon Dynamite’), ready to perform. 3D glasses are distributed, which the class puts on, and the show is transformed from nerdy and weird to cool – black lights, lasers, and a smoke machine. By the end of the video the entire school staff and students are rocking out in an epic dance party. Relatable lyrics such as “Where are the cool kids? Did they become our parents?” bring the song to everyone’s level.

MRYGLD has a sound which reminds us of the likes of Brit alt rockers Keane, as well as more contemporary artists such as Marinas Trench. Slick and polished, they are clearly set to go the distance.
