Imelda May will perform the Irish National Anthem ahead of the historic boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor tonight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Irish singer and songwriter will sing her national anthem – ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ – for fellow Dubliner McGregor.
“I am really honoured to be asked to perform the Irish National Anthem before the fight,” says May. “I think he’s an incredible athlete and as a proud Dubliner I’ll be rooting for him on the night.”
Imelda continues to promote her new album ‘Life. Love. Flesh. Blood’ with the release of new single ‘Leave Me Lonely’ on October 6th. The Top 5 album, which is on course to be one of 2017’s biggest sellers, contains the BBC Radio 2 playlisted singles ‘Call Me’, ‘Black Tears’, and ‘Should’ve Been You’. Imelda’s autumn UK tour includes a headline show at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall, where Imelda supported The Who in April in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
‘Life. Love. Flesh. Blood’ was recorded in Nashville and produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett. On release, the album topped the UK Americana chart and landed No.5 in the official UK album chart (her second UK top 5) with Imelda’s strongest first sales week ever in the UK. The album also received the best reviews of her career, championed by publications including The Daily Telegraph, Evening Standard, Q, Daily Mirror and The Sun.
Imelda has so far promoted ‘Life. Love. Flesh. Blood’ with performances on BBC1’s The One Show, The Graham Norton Show and ITV’s Tonight At The London Palladium. She also appeared on Chris Evans BBC Radio 2 show, where she performed a brilliant cover of U2’s ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I Was Looking For’, and joined The Guardian for a webchat.
Imelda May has become one of Ireland’s most celebrated female artists. Discovered by Jools Holland, who asked Imelda to support him on tour, Imelda has gone on to perform alongside legendary artists including Lou Reed, Bono and Smokey Robinson and can count high profile artists including Bob Dylan(who recently revealed he is a fan of Imelda in a rare interview with Bill Flanagan) and Bono amongst her fans.
