Being legally blind doesn’t stand in way of Rando Rexx’s determination – in fact it makes him even more so. A tireless creative, from the north of South Carolina, has carved his own path to success, enjoying every step of the process along the way.
Still only 19 years old, Rando Rexx has been guided by both his Christian faith and deep love of Hip Hop, and taken inspiration from artists across the genres – from Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder to Lil Baby and Lil Wayne. Additionally, he’s honouring a musical legacy that’s been passed down through the generations: his mother, Avé, is descended from a long line of musically inclined relatives, while his father, Luvonachek, gave Rexx a figure to admire and learn from, with regard to his rapping ability. Blending all these inspirations, he’s powered on and forged a style that’s entirely his own.
While Rando Rexx has been making music since he was in middle school, his new single, ‘Firecracker’, is the first definitive step towards a pop music career, away from the foundations of his musical identity in Hip Hop. ‘Firecracker’ is a bouncy bedroom pop track, with a hint of tension underpinning it, in order to keep the momentum up.
With bright guitar riffs and a catchy melody, ‘Firecracker’ sees Rexx fixated by a girl, one who is “exactly what he’s been after”, and who can “keep him on his toes”, and she matches his vibe, calming his chaotic energy. He pulls us into the maelstrom of desire, toggling between swagger and vulnerability, as he affirms, she was “one in a million”. But something happened, and the suggestion is that all is not well. Rexx sings, “If only I listened”, sadly, “maybe things would be different”.
The music video for ‘Firecracker’ sees Rando Rexx team up with director Kadence Simmons, and feels very much like a portrait of young love. Rexx’s ‘Firecracker’ appears out of the blue, and his whole world turns upside down as soon as he sees her smile. Dates playing mini-golf, arcade games, laser tag, and going out to dinner seem to show that everything is beautiful, but perhaps, like a firecracker, it’s short lived. The flames burn brightly, and in the moment everything feels like it’s perfect, but soon enough, it’s fizzled out.
