Power Down return with a super catchy pop track, ‘Shelter’, accompanied by a moving animated music video.
‘Shelter’ is the follow-up to their track, ‘Bag In Hand’, released late last year.
Continuing with the powerful lyricism and poignant storytelling to be found in ‘Bag In Hand’, Power Down tell the all too familiar story, especially these days, of a universe that is ruled by relentless anxiety, with no evident escapes from an invisible hell-scape.
The protagonist in ‘Shelter’ is a someone who is laid down with the weight of feeling isolated inside; they are at the point of collapse after running away from their mounting troubles. They vow, and refuse, to “suffer as a martyr to the pain”, and want to build a sanctuary, a shelter, for their heart, where they can stay “safe inside,” and “listen to the rain”, instead of being constantly caught in the thunderstorms that cloud their vision.
As the mellow grooves of the bass lay the lines for the vocalist, jazz horns start to punch through the instrumentation, joined by tense piano. All the while, the singer tells of their struggles to find shelter from a world that fell apart, his angst palpable.
The music video for ‘Shelter’ is on the surface a simple animated narrative, but holds a much deeper meaning. For many of us, we find home to be the most real shelter we can have – where we can hide away from the problems of the world outside. This isn’t the case for everyone though, as some have to deal with volatile home lives, where invisible demons lurk in the shadows and settle into dark corners, allowing no sense of security.
The protagonist of the music video cannot truly silence the noise around her, even with headphones on. Everywhere she turns, chaos and destruction is there to meet her. She finds herself caught in the very jaws of a vicious beast, and she almost loses all hope, until she realises that it’s merely a nightmare, and all she has to do is find her voice, and shatter the illusion.
