Retaining elements of his self-styled sound, “Celtic Rock”, Seán Griffin follows up ‘People Are Mad’ with his latest single, ‘Rocks Off’, from his forthcoming debut solo album.
Transforming the familiar phrase into something of a mantra for these chaotic times, Griffin matches his clever lyricism to a vibing beat, and some good old rock and roll. It’s a change from the bouncy beat and banjo of ‘People Are Mad’, but no less memorable. Speaking of the track, which he had set aside for years before reviving it for his debut album, Griffin said,
“It always sounded great and I had this nagging feeling of wanting to get it out into the world. It has always had some rock and roll swagger to it, and it just felt like the right moment”.
Just like ‘People Are Mad’, Griffin has given ‘Rocks Off’ a beautifully shot video, this time infused with retro visuals. We begin with a man and his family, stalled in traffic in their mini-van, when a 1962 Corvette pulls up alongside. This leads to an Old Hollywood style fantasy sequence, of roaring engines, passions by the fire, and and a rose-petal scene, a la the film, ‘American Beauty’. Griffin continues,
“It seemed best to treat it as a passing fantasy and to bookend it with my family in the beginning and the end since they are my anchor”.
‘Rocks Off’ comes ahead of a busy time for Griffin, which will see him touring the album in club and festival dates across North America, the UK, and Europe – including a 7 night tour of Ireland. Meanwhile, fans will be able to catch him this October at dates in New York and Massachuesetts.
