Vic Lucas’s story is one that has taken him all over the world. Although he was born in Nigeria, and raised in South Africa, it was when he moved to the US that he found his future in music. His new single and music video, ‘Holy Ghost’, featuring fellow Mississippi artist, Lady Audri, is an Afrobeat celebration of God, grounded in soul.
Vic Lucas grew up with music all around him: both his parents were preachers, and his brother was director of the church choir, so it was always there. It took living alone in the US however for him to write his first song, ‘Enough’, setting him on a music career path, as, without any official promotion or campaign, it exploded onto the Billboard charts.
From there, with the encouragement of a former college lecturer – turned publishing exec, he moved out to Nashville in 2021. Meetings with music industry honchos left him feeling very doubtful about his abilities, however, and so he stepped away from it all. This had a deep effect: he was forced to question his identity. He’s African; he’s a man of faith; from there he rebranded his image, and set out to become a bridge between Afrobeat and spiritual soul, and his sound celebrates God, groove, and that joy in knowing you are exactly who you are meant to be.
Joining Vic Lucas on ‘Holy Ghost’ is Grammy award winning engineer, Lady Audri, whose best known work was on ‘The Urban Hymnal’, winner of Best Roots Gospel Album in 2022. ‘Holy Ghost’ asks listeners the question, “If the Holy Ghost is living in me, what does it look and feel like?”. The song answers its question by way of energetic grooves and lyrics that are packed full of praise. ‘Holy Ghost’ blends gospel soul with a vibrant Afrobeat rhythm, showing that faith is a powerful and moving thing.
The music video for ‘Holy Ghost’ sees a man, seemingly deep in pain, sit down with a suitcase next to a young woman. Concerned for his welfare, she asks him if he’s okay. He responds with eyes that flash like fire at her. Next thing we see the woman chasing a figure, dressed in white, who keeps evading her no matter how fast she runs. Soon she is overtaken by dance, and joins Vic as he leads a choreographed crew, dancing in ecstasy. It’s a meeting with the divine, bringing the message that once we feel the power of the Holy Ghost, we’ll never be the same again.
