Getting Ahead: Rising Star Lara Stankovic Speaks With EP About Her Music, And New Single, ‘Go Ahead’

An artist who brings a refreshing, relatable honesty to her sound, Serbian-Canadian singer songwriter Lara Stankovic is on the rise. We spoke with the ‘Go Ahead’ singer about what inspires her, and what she’s got coming up.

Was there a specific moment you knew you had to follow your calling to make music?

Yes, absolutely. It wasn’t just one moment, but a series of them. Every time I wrote something that felt honest or performed and saw how people connected emotionally, it became clearer that music is where I feel most alive and purposeful. It felt less like a choice and more like something I couldn’t ignore.

Who are some artists that influence or inspire you? Do you look up to any particular artist?

I’m inspired by so many amazing artists. They’re all different but kind of the same.I look up to Tate Mcrae and Dua Lipa the most at the moment. But growing up, those were Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez mostly.

‘Go Ahead’ is very empowering. Do you consider ‘Go Ahead’ a break-up anthem, a self-love anthem, or something else?

To me, ‘Go Ahead’ is a liberation anthem. It touches on the strength it takes to walk away from what no longer serves you. Whether that’s a relationship, a friendship, or even a mindset. It’s about reclaiming your power and knowing your worth, which makes it both a break-up song and a self-love anthem.

Tell us about filming the ‘Go Ahead’ music video in Belgrade. Does this city hold a special significance for you?

Filming in Belgrade was emotional and exciting. It shaped a big part of who I am, so it felt only right to shoot there. It added another layer of personal meaning to the whole experience. Because my first love and I met there.

What are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of being vulnerable and confident in your music?

The most rewarding part is hearing someone say, “I felt that. I’ve been through that too”. Vulnerability creates connection. The challenge is the fear that comes with showing your scars. wondering if people will misunderstand or judge. But I’ve learned that confidence isn’t about being unafraid, it’s about showing up anyway.

Do you hope this song and music video have a positive impact on your fans? What do you hope people take away after listening?

Definitely. I hope it reminds people that their peace and happiness are worth protecting. That walking away isn’t a weakness, it’s growth. Just setting your boundaries in general might help a lot on both ends. I want people who listen to my song to feel empowered to choose themselves, unapologetically.

What advice would you give to someone who relates to the story told in ‘Go Ahead’?

Trust yourself. Even when it’s hard, even when it’s lonely. Choosing yourself is never the wrong move. You deserve the same love you give so freely to others. Don’t be afraid to let go of what dims your light.

As your debut music video, how does ‘Go Ahead’ set the tone for what’s next?

‘Go Ahead’ is a song about the strength that you hold in yourself after you stop says I’m here, I have something to say, and I’m not afraid to be seen. It sets the tone for honest, bold music that reflects both vulnerability and strength. There’s so much more coming, and it’s only going to get deeper and more intentional from here.
