Based in Baltimore, rock singer-songwriter Mark Davison started out in his musical career as the co-founder of Cubic Feet, many decades ago, and their impressive discography has well stood up to the years that have past. Now, as the main man behind his latest project, Nuke The Soup, Mark is the head of a fabulous band of musicians, including keyboardist Brian Simms, guitarist Gerry Leonard, bassist Mike Mennell, and drummers Chester Thompson and John Thomakos, who are collectively responsible for delectable rock and roll tracks that blend together introspective and socially conscious lyrics with infectiously catchy melodies.
Previous albums, 2009’s ‘Make Waves Not War’, and ‘Deeper’, from 2018, took on such subject matter as politics, climate change, and the intricacies of personal relationships. Their highly anticipated upcoming album, ‘Dancing on the Edge’ sees Nuke The Soup continue in their quest to push boundaries, with a series of energetic songs that explore those deeper questions of life, while giving listeners earworms that will keep them hooked.
Avid skier Mark was inspired by an email that promised the “biggest snow of the season”, and he followed his heart, despite being in recovery from a personal setback. He revelled in the pure, free-spirited joy of gliding down those snowy peaks, and also seized the opportunity to turn the experience into a song, whose message is: “when inspiration calls, go”.
The upbeat jangly rock guitars and Mark’s storytelling are just two of the great parts of this track: the other is the music video, directed and edited by Danny Brown, which takes its inspiration from skiing footage shot by Brown’s father in Aspen back in the 1970s. It’s warm and fuzzy, filled with nostalgia, of skiers cheerfully flying down the mountains, captured on Super 8 film, and serves as a joyful homage to Aspen’s winter playground. It’s incredibly authentic feeling with its grainy textures, retro grading, and vintage charm, but it’s all new clips. It’s impossible to avoid the call of the mountains, and take full advantage of the opportunity. If you feel like you’re stuck in a rut, why not see what chances are out there for the taking?
