Insisting that, “No, I’m not gonna break”, right from the start, NYC based artist Mark Ciani sounds resolute in his new single, ‘Some Kind Of Purgatory’.
He’s a man who refuses to lose, and yet at the same time, his voice shows something of the great emotional strain he’s under. He’s been driven to the edge of a precipice, and over three and a half minutes he conveys by way of adventurous, experimental – at times discordant – fearless art-rock, he lays his cards in front of him.
The main character in Ciani’s song is trapped in some kind of purgatory, but he’s certainly not going to stay calm while he’s there. He’s after a resolution, and he’s desperate to get there, by all means necessary.
The lyric video, created by Mike Kundrath, is equally matched to the thoughtfulness of the song’s writing, and takes just as much care as Ciani does himself with his words. The director uses the set pieces symbolically: frayed ropes, televisions that are on the way out, mobile phones with their ghostly blue light, are juxtaposed with flocks of birds, frantically flying heavenward, to cloud covered skies. It’s all a stunning metaphor and works well with the song.
