Following on from our review of Mihiri Silva’s new single, ‘I’m Outta Control‘, we speak to Mihiri herself.
What is the earliest memory you have of wanting to become a musical artist? How does this drive your artistry today?
I remember as a kid always singing and performing for my grandparents and relatives. That’s when I realized that I was born to become a musician. That foundation grounded me and guided me on a musical path to shape the musician I am today.
Who are some of your musical influences? How do these influences shape your sound and style?
My father and grandmother always will be number 1 on the list of musical influences. Other artists who have influenced me are Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, and Missy Elliott. All these artists come from different kinds of genres, such as R n’ B, Pop, Dance, and Hip Hop. I don’t want to be known for only one kind of musical style, I infuse many genres and make it my own.
How does ‘I’m Outta Control’ fit into the style of your previous music or showcase your evolution as an artist?
‘I’m Outta Control’ is different from my previous work and I always try to mix new music with Retro sounds. I try my best to sound better, compose better and always look that my lyrics tell the story in a creative and precise way. In that aspect, I strive to be better every day and with each song, I’m creating.
As the title track for the film ‘Blue Alliance’, how did you infuse elements of the film into the song and music video?
The song is a reflection of the movie and the lyrics showcase the personalities of the main roles. The music is composed to fit the scenes precisely. Some of the actors in the movie also portray their characters in the music video to make it unique.
Who could you have not done the ‘I’m Outta Control’ music video without? What was your collaboration process like?
I couldn’t have made the music video without Brian Pinkus, the CEO of Light Flash Productions, who also was the director and actor of the movie Blue Alliance and in the music video as well. Other important people were, Lukas Schläpfer, Gerhard Berger and Jorge Rosado who were part of the camera crew and make-up artist Eni Ford. And last but not least our cast, Romana Perrone, Leyla Chykulina, Kevin Birrer and Dragan Volic. Although the guitarist isn’t in the music video, I wouldn’t have been able to make this incredible song without Lorenz Kappeler. The collaboration was fantastic and felt like working with your family. I helped direct the music video with Brian Pinkus and also sat with him while he was doing the editing.
What part of production for ‘I’m Outta Control’ was the most fun? Do any moments or scenes stand out to you?
Working at the recording studio was really fun and I had a blast with the film crew. Although we worked hard and were very serious, we had some bloopers and a lot to laugh about. The scene that stands out the most for me was the one in the interrogation room which was pretty intense and we had to be very serious. However by some parts the crew and cast had problems to keep a straight face, me included.
Talk to us a little bit about incorporating your interest in fashion design into the ‘I’m Outta Control’ music video.
As I’ve done my studies in fashion design, I wanted the outfits to stand out. I had a vision for the main character in the music video which was a warrior in style of a ninja kind of character combined with red make up such as the native Americans have.
What can fans look forward to from you next? Are you working on any current projects?
New singles coming out next year, where I’ll be showing a different side of me. Yes, I’m already working on some new music with new collaborations.
