The third segment of the brilliant Netflix revival series, ‘Top Boy’, has become one of the most anticipated projects in the streaming platform’s history. Featuring production from entertainment stars such as Drake and LeBron James, the first and second series of the Netflix reboot gained critical acclaim for not only their gritty, realistic portrayal of fictional East London estate Summerhouse, but also their brilliant soundtracks (which you can learn about here). Now, the third series seeks to wrap up all the loose ends and create a thrilling conclusion to one of Netflix’s best shows.
The original two-series, eight-episode run of Top Boy aired between October 2011 and September 2013, receiving a high level of acclaim for its production and realism. Plans for a third series were dropped in 2014 by Channel 4, the network broadcasting the show, but were picked back up by Canadian rapper/actor Aubrey Graham, better known as Drake, and the show eventually got a reboot announcement in 2017. Series 1 of the reboot (3rd overall) premiered in September 2019 to critical acclaim, and the show quickly became one of Netflix’s best and most popular crime dramas, rising to Breaking Bad levels of fame across not only Britain, but America as well. Following an equally critically acclaimed second series in March 2022, Netflix seeks to conclude the reboot’s brilliant five-year run come September, with the eagerly anticipated third and final series premiering September 7th, 2023.
Currently, the only material available from Series 3 of ‘Top Boy’ is teaser trailers, behind the scenes photoshoots and the previously-mentioned soundtrack album. Without spoiling any of the first or second series, it can be assumed that the stories of main characters Dushane Hill (Ashley Walters) and Gerard Sullivan (Kane Robinson) will come to a close in the series, one way or another – whether in death, or in a peaceful conclusion, is yet to be determined. For now, all we can do is watch the trailers (one linked down below) as they come out and eagerly anticipate the release of the series, come September 7th.
