RJ’s Latest Arrival and Slum Village rock along with a classic D-Town vibe in their new single and video, ‘One Step At A Time’.
Formed in 1978, RJ’s Latest Arrival have been a staple of the Detroit Hip-Hop, R&B and soul scenes, along with their contemporaries, Slum Village. With hits such as ‘Shackles’, ‘Heaven In Your Arms’, and ‘Off The Hook (With Your Love)’, RJ’s have been topping the Billboard soul charts and are beloved icons in the music scene of the Motor City.
RJ Rice, a founding member of RJ’s Latest Arrival, went on to found Barak Records in 1992, which led to the formation of a slew of influential rap groups, including Slum Village. Originally comprising rappers J Dilla and Baatin, Slum Village has over the years topped the charts with their singles and albums, while collaborating along the way with the likes of Kanye West, John Legend, Questlove, and De La Soul, among many others. Now, in joining forces with RJ’s Latest Arrival, they give fans and listeners the opportunity to experience Detroit’s influence on music like never before.
‘One Step At A Time’ mixes the best of old school with that of the new, coming together in a track that will have much appeal to fans of funk, soul, and hip-hop alike. With a slow-jam fleshed out with strings and funky riffs, RJ Rice duets with DeDe Leitta, the lyrics and their vocals soulful and smooth. Slum Village crashes the intimate bliss of the pair, albeit with funk and seduction, giving the track an extra pop of pizazz to close it out.
The music video for ‘One Step At A Time’ keeps true to the retro feel of the song, and features RJ and DeDe, decked out in Fedora and silk coat respectively, crooning in front of photos from back in the day. Meanwhile the members of the band are grooving along, while couples dance behind. Slum Village takes to the stage, rapping their piece, with footage of the streets of Detroit accompanying their flow.
