Mae Muller Is Set To Represent UK In Eurovision Song Contest This Year With New Single, ‘I Wrote A Song’, In Which She Turns Pain Into Power.

Mae Muller returns with fierce new single, ‘I Wrote A Song’, which was officially announced yesterday as the song to represent the UK in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. 2023 is the 67th year of the Eurovision Song Contest, and is set to be held in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine. Mae Muller will be performing in the final, broadcast on the BBC on May 13.

Mae Muller brings her mesmerising vocals to ‘I Wrote A Song’, in a dance-pop anthem that speaks to the pure magic of turning pain into power. Co-written with Karen Poole (best known for her work with Kylie Minogue, David Guetta, and Galantis), as well as Lewis Thompson (Anne-Marie, Little Mix, Steve Aoki), ‘I Wrote A Song’ serves as a showcase to the strength and full-force of Muller-s songwriting and her personality. With lyrics such as, “When you said you were leaving/To work on your mental health/You didn’t mention the cheating/You kept that one to yourself”, she unleashes passion and emotion while never once allowing the other person to have the upper hand.

Speaking of the track, Mae says,

“’I Wrote A Song’ is a track I wrote after the fallout from a relationship. I was hurt and also a little angry, so I thought, where can I put this negative energy and make something positive out of it? The song is less about revenge and more about empowering yourself. While I was recording the song, I envisioned me and my girls dancing to it on a Saturday night, and that’s exactly what I want people to do! To dance, sing, let go, and feel empowered after listening.”

The video for the track capitalises on the carefree energy of the song, with a bright and vibrant ’90s aesthetic. Directed by duo AB/CD/CD (known for their work with artists like Lily Allen, Franz Ferdinand, and Kasabian), we follow Muller as she bounces back from a breakup by literally stomping all over any lingering memories of her ex, via the ingenious use of fantastically detailed miniatures sets. Intercut with tongue-in-cheek choreography, the video fuses magical realism and true-to-life emotion to wild and glorious effect.

‘I Wrote A Song’ is the follow-up to Muller’s 2022 single, ‘I Just Came To Dance’, and the platinum-certified smash hit, ‘Better Days’, which saw her collaborate with NEIKED and Polo G.
