Paul Lewis & Romeo Rage Take Inspiration From Bowie And Prince For Rocking New Album, ‘Sky’s Rust’

Released through Realize Records on November 18 last year, ‘Sky’s Rust’, from Paul Lewis & Romeo Rage is a rocking good album.

Taking clear inspiration from the likes of David Bowie, and Prince, the 8 track album is a rollicking good ride all the way through from start to finish.

Opening with ‘Rips’, which namechecks the album title, the listener is left in no doubt that they’re in for a great album from the very first note.

Prolific singer songwriter and producer, possibly best known as the composer behind such films as ‘Days Of Power’, Paul Lewis, joins forces on vocals, guitar and keyboard, with jazz-fusion drummer, John Sanders, coming together as Romeo Rage. The result is a fresh and eminently listenable album, that will appeal to fans of all rock music, but ultimately to those who enjoy the likes of the afore-mentioned Bowie and Prince, but also Iggy Pop and Nick Cave. Essentially it’s an opus from artists at the top of their game, who feel free to be able to experiment with sound and styles, with no fear of losing any strength of creativity.

Stand out track for this reviewer, ‘Black’, is one that feels like a deep cut from an obscure Bowie album, and if I just squint a little I could fully believe it too.

Speaking about the Romeo Rage collaboration, John Sanders says,

“Romeo Rage is what happens when two guys boldly blur several genres and marry West Coast riffs with East Coast edge. The result is a sort of controlled chaos that makes for a unique audio journey,”

Adding to John’s comment, Paul Lewis says,

“The pandemic shook the world and affected everything that I do, so out of that came most of these tunes. Some of them I had written and hadn’t done anything with until this new idea came. I’ve always wanted to play edgier and darker material yet still having a pop sensibility about the tunes. I found some amazing musicians to play with and now we are ready to bring it.”

This isn’t the duo’s first tilt as Romeo Rage; the new album comes hot on the heels of their 3 song contribution to the independent film, ‘Dark State’, which was released across the US in AMC Theatres in 2021.

‘Sky’s Rust’ is out now and can be streamed on Spotify. Watch the music video for ‘Black’ below.
